Our revered Captain, Janette, kept saying, “If you can see the hills, it’s going to rain, if you can’t see the hills, it’s already raining!
And nothing could be truer. Our long awaited home match v Durham Ladies began with a slight drizzle, which got steadily stronger and more persistent until we could see the greens beginning to flood before our very eyes. Not to be deterred, and as the course was still open, everyone managed to get teed-off but sadly after a short while, players had to mark their balls when the Greenkeepers had no option but to close the course.
With no realistic prospect of the weather improving, discussion between the Durham officials and ourselves came to the unfortunate decision to abandon the match and declare a draw, with each County holding the Shield for six months. In the circumstances, undoubtedly the fairest decision.
I felt so sorry for both teams who were so eager to play, and were clearly enjoying the experience of county team golf, judging by the amount of hilarity in the clubhouse and on the tee. I am so proud of all the Cumbria team, who never moaned once despite being drenched and whose team spirit was immense.Massive thanks to everyone at Penrith Golf Club who were involved in hosting the event, you did me proud, and to the ladies who came to watch. Thanks also to our President Sue, who despite recent knee surgery, came to cheer the team on, and of course to Janette, our ever optimistic Captain. And finally, thanks to Lesley Still, secretary, Durham Senior Ladies, and Del Brady, Past Captain, Durham Senior ladies, and all the Durham players, for making the event so enjoyable. Better luck next year everyone!

CUMBRIA v DURHAM 2022
The County Bronze team traveled to play Durham at Barnard Castle on Thursday 4th August.2022
We were competing for the Mrs. Dorothy Harrison (Durham) & Mrs. Mouli Moore (Cumbria) Shield.
The team battled hard but unfortunately lost 5-1 after some close matches.
Although the results were not in our favour, Durham and Barnard Castle golf club were excellent hosts and with the great condition of the course and good weather made the day most enjoyable.
Congratulations to Sharron Simpson, Gill Forrester and Annette Park receiving their colours for bronze team
